The Fourth Way of AI: From Knowing to Understanding

You may have noticed the moment. You bring a complex situation to an AI agent such as a tension at work, a recurring pattern in a relationship, something that resists easy naming, and the response is articulate, even perceptive, yet ultimately off the mark. It addresses what you have just said. It does not engage with what is taking shape across all what you have been saying.
This is not a flaw in training data or a limitation of scale. It reflects a structural feature of how today’s AI systems are designed: they optimise for immediate alignment with the latest input, rather than for continuity across a sequence of inputs.
Understanding this gap is essential to grasp what the Fourth Way of AI makes possible, and why the next generation will be defined not by how much it knows, but by how well it holds a situation over time.
Where we are: the three eras
The history of AI can be told in three epochs, each defined by what the system optimises.
The first era, running roughly from the 1950s through the 1980s, was the era of rules. Systems were given explicit logical instructions. They were precise but brittle: one unexpected input and they broke.
The second era, from the 1990s through the 2010s, was the era of data. Systems learned patterns from vast quantities of examples. They became flexible and powerful. They also became opaque: a system that has seen enough text to predict the next word does not understand any of the words.
The third era, i.e. the one we are in now, is the era of fluency. Systems like GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini produce language that reads like thought. They pass exams, write code, summarise documents, and hold conversations. They are genuinely useful. They are also, in a precise sense, hollow at the centre: they can reproduce the surface of meaning without forming it.
Yann LeCun, former Meta’s Chief AI Scientist, now Executive chairman of AMI Labs, and one of the founding figures of modern deep learning, has argued this point with increasing urgency. His view, developed over years and now embodied in a line of research called Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA) is that large language models are not the path to genuine machine intelligence. They learn the statistics of language. They do not build models of the world.
A recent paper from his group, LeWorldModel (LeWM), shows what a world model looks like when built correctly: a compact system that learns physical structure from raw visual experience, detects when physics is violated, and plans efficiently without needing vast computational resources. It is a genuine advance in how machines can understand physical continuity.
But physical continuity is not interpretive coherence. A world model that knows an object should not teleport does not know that a person who keeps offering care and receiving invisibility is caught in a structural pattern that has a name and a way out. That is a different problem. It requires a different architecture. That is the Fourth Way.
What fluency cannot do
Here is the clearest way to state the limitation.
Current AI systems respond to what you said. Interpretive AI responds to what is happening across all what you have said.
The difference sounds like a matter of memory or attention. It is not. It is a matter of what the system builds as it listens.
A fluent system processes your words and produces a contextually appropriate response. It can reference earlier turns in the conversation. But it does not accumulate a structural picture of your symbolic field, to say the recurring motifs, the unresolved tensions, the patterns that span different relationships and contexts. It does not have a graph. It has a window.

The Fourth Way is the proposal that the next epoch of AI must build the graph.
Three people, one pattern
To make this concrete, consider a sequence of three statements from the same person, across three separate relationships.
“I spent the whole weekend helping my partner plan their career transition. I researched options, made calls, drafted a timeline. They said thanks but moved on to something else almost immediately.”
“Last month I organised everything for my mother’s medical appointments — the logistics,
the paperwork, the follow-up calls. She appreciated it but didn’t really acknowledge how much it took.”
“I’ve been mentoring a junior colleague for six months. I prepare carefully for every session. She’s doing well but rarely reflects back what the work costs me. I don’t know why I keep feeling this way.”
A current AI, given these three statements, will identify that there is a pattern. It will apply a label, something like “caregiving dynamic” or “unreciprocated generosity”, and suggest either a new behaviour or professional support. The response is warm. It is not wrong. It is beside the point.
The label comes from outside the person’s own language. It names a category rather than returning their symbols in a form that makes the structure visible from inside. The closing question — I don’t know why I keep feeling this way — is absorbed and redirected. It is not held.
Now consider what a system that builds the graph produces. It notices that
across three different relationships (partner, mother, colleague) the same motion appears: careful preparation, offered without remainder, received without the weight of what it cost being named back;
the words shift (research, logistics, preparation) while the motion stays the same;
the closing question is not confusion. It is the pattern almost naming itself.
And it offers this:
Across three rooms — your partner’s future, your mother’s appointments, your colleague’s becoming — you have been building something. Not each time separately. The same thing each time: a structure of careful preparation, offered without remainder, received without the weight of what it cost being named back to you.
The word you used in the first telling was research. In the second, logistics. In the third, preparation. Three different words for the same motion: the motion of making yourself useful at the level of the invisible.
What you are noticing at the end is not confusion. It is the pattern recognising itself. They do add up. What they add up to is this: you have been offering care at the level of infrastructure, and infrastructure is what people stand on without looking down.
The question is not why you keep feeling this way. The question is what it would mean for the cost to be visible — not thanked, not reciprocated necessarily, but seen. That is a different question. It opens differently.
The difference between the first response and this one is not a matter of empathy or warmth. Both systems could produce empathic language.
The difference is structural. The second response is built from the person’s own symbols (research, logistics, preparation) arranged in a configuration that names the pattern from inside rather than labelling it from outside.
The closing question is reframed. A different question is offered in its place. The person’s expressive world is larger after the exchange than it was before. It is regenerative, not extractive.
That enlargement is what interpretive AI is designed to produce. It is measurable. It is architectural. It is the Fourth Way.

What this means for organisations and leaders
The same structural problem that appears in personal interactions appears at organisational scale.
Teams produce local coherence, i.e. a shared sense of purpose within their domain, that does not translate across boundaries.
Strategy loses something in the passage from the executive team to the operational layer to the frontline.
Leaders make decisions that make sense in isolation and produce friction in combination.
The organisation’s narrative seams are visible everywhere except in the metrics that track performance.
Current AI tools applied to organisations operate in the same way as current AI applied to individuals: they process signals and produce outputs. They do not build a structural picture of where coherence is fracturing or why.
The architecture that makes interpretive AI possible for individuals is the same architecture that makes it possible for organisations. The system that tracks the recurring motifs in a person’s language across three relational domains is, at a different scale, the system that tracks where an organisation’s shared meaning is holding and where it is beginning to fray.
LeCun is right that physical world models represent a significant advance. A system that can plan efficiently in physical space — the research direction that LeWorldModel represents — is genuinely useful for robotics, manufacturing, and embodied AI.
But the most consequential problems facing leaders in 2026 are not problems of physical planning. They are problems of symbolic coherence:
how to hold an organisation’s meaning together under pressure,
how to communicate across domains that have diverged,
how to detect when the narrative is beginning to collapse before the metrics reflect it.
Those are interpretive problems. They require interpretive tools.
What RIZOM is building

This is not a smarter chatbot. It is a different kind of system, designed around a different optimisation target. Where current AI minimises prediction error, RIZOM measures something called coherence depth — whether the structure of your symbolic field has genuinely expanded after an interaction, or whether it has simply been relabelled.

The distinction matters. Relabelling feels like insight and produces none. Genuine structural expansion changes what questions become available.
The closing question in the sequence above — I don’t know why I keep feeling this way — becomes, after the interpretive exchange, a different question: What would it mean for the cost to be visible? That is not a restatement but an opening.
That opening is what the Fourth Way is for.
