A ritual begins as a pattern of attention. Thanksgiving, in its civic form, translates a private emotion into collective rhythm: it is a gesture of gratitude rehearsed until it becomes belonging. Yet every year the table also exposes the fault lines in that belonging. Who is missing. Who is not speaking. Who comes late or not at all. Between generosity and grievance, repetition and refusal, Thanksgiving becomes a test of the symbolic field.
